School personnel get raises

INVERNESS -- The School Board on Tuesday approved raises for the Citrus Educational Support Personnel, the clerks, secretaries and teachers aides in the district. The union had settled on a raise of 30 cents an hour retroactive for 107 days. Professional and technical workers, who had been paid more than was negotiated last year, received a one-time bonus equal to 15 cents per hour retroactive to July 1, 2001. Negotiations for the new school year are expected to start with all the employee groups in August.

Remember manatees over holiday

INVERNESS -- The Save the Manatee Club issued notices Tuesday urging those who take to the water this Fourth of July weekend to watch for manatees that are still in Citrus waters. The hot spots for manatee activity are Kings Bay and the Crystal and Homosassa rivers. Boaters are urged to wear polarized sunglasses, stay in deep-water channels and follow posted speed limits. They should also look for signs of manatees, such as swirls on the water surface. Anyone who sees an injured, dead, tagged or orphaned manatee, or one that is being harassed, should call 1-888-404-FWCC, dial #FWC on your cellular phone or use VHF Channel 16 on your marine radio.
