A shady spot for the asking

City life getting to you? Set aside a cool early morning or late afternoon to observe Florida's native wildlife at Lettuce Lake Park. The finger extension of the Hillsborough River and its surrounding forests hold more than 300 native plants species. Most can be seen from 1.6 miles of nature trails and boardwalks. Walk quietly and look carefully and you may glimpse a barred owl, five-lined skink, alligator and roseate spoonbill. Pick up a boardwalk guide while you check out the butterfly garden at Audubon's Resource Center. The center offers a 30-minute guided tour at 5 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays; cost is $4 per person. The park is at 6920 E Fletcher Ave. For information or directions, call 983-0258.

Guv'na brunch in Lutz

A $5 brunch will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday for Lutz guv'na candidate Cheryl Benton at the Lutz Community Center, next to the Lutz Branch Library off Lutz-Lake Fern Road. The menu includes grits, fruit, coffee, juice and a casserole of eggs, sausage and cheese. Take-outs will be available. Each July 4, a guv'na is selected through a fundraising competition and serves a year a Lutz's mock chief of state. Funds raised by guv'na candidates are used for community projects. For information, call Marilyn Wannamaker at 949-1482.
