Homeless coalition picks president
By RYAN DAVIS, Times Staff Writer The director of New Port Richey's World Relief affiliate was elected Thursday as the president of the Coalition for the Homeless of Pasco County. David Gray will serve a two-year term. World Relief is the National Association of Evangelicals' program for resettling refugees. The coalition is a collection of representatives from area social service agencies and county government. It recently applied for its largest-ever grant, $1.1-million, from the federal government. Gray replaces Sister Joan Foley, the founder of Connections Job Development Corp. in New Port Richey. Also at Thursday's meeting, the coalition announced it had nominated Sister Foley for the 2002 Outstanding Service to Homeless People in Florida Award. It is given by the Florida Coalition by the Homeless. In his new position Gray will help pick the coalition's next executive director. Its first executive director, Leerone Benjamin, was let go this month after less than three months on the job. Gray said it will be important to hire someone who can represent the coalition at events, because all of the other members have other primary jobs. His vice president will be Angela Littlefield of Gulf Coast Community Care's homeless shelter in Hudson. -- Ryan Davis covers social services in Pasco County.
