Man dies after jump from bridge
By BRADY DENNIS, Times Staff Writer CRYSTAL SPRINGS -- A 34-year-old Zephyrhills man died Thursday when he jumped from a bridge over the Hillsborough River and likely drowned after he hit a log that was in the water, according to Pasco County sheriff's reports. Deputies said Stanley Walter Scott of 38620 Fifth Ave. had gone to the area to swim with another man and woman. County fire rescue dispatchers got a call just after 10 a.m., indicating that a man had jumped from the bridge -- commonly referred to as the Crystal Springs bridge. Deputies arrived but couldn't locate Scott. Helicopters from the Pasco and Hillsborough sheriff's offices joined the search, also with no luck. A Pasco dive team was called in. After a 45-minute search, they found Scott's body near the bridge in 8 to 10 feet of water. Investigators said the distance from the bridge to the water is about 16 feet. They said one man jumped from the bridge into the water. Scott followed but never resurfaced. He was pronounced dead at 1:08 p.m. Near the bridge, deputies found a log that they said Scott might have hit as he entered the water. Although the medical examiner will make a final determination, the death appears to be accidental, said sheriff's spokesman Jon Powers. "At this point, there's no indication of foul play," Powers said. "We're classifying it as a death investigation, with indications of accidental drowning." © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
