Woman faces child neglect charge

BROOKSVILLE -- A 48-year-old Brooksville woman was charged with two counts of child neglect on Thursday.

Gloria Brown of 1105 Gladys St. turned herself in at the Hernando County Jail on an outstanding warrant, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office. She was released from jail Thursday on her own recognizance.

Sheriff's Deputy Bill Pope said he received an anonymous tip on Dec. 29 that two 4-year-old girls had been left alone at Brown's home. Pope found the girls among pails of white water that had been used to hang wallpaper. Dead cockroaches floated in the water, authorities said.

Authorities took the girls to another home and issued a warrant for Brown. The Florida Department of Children and Families told authorities that a caseworker was investigating the household.

Teen cited in cap gun incident

SPRING HILL -- Four sheriff's deputies arrived at 4267 Elwood Road early Thursday and saw an 18-year-old shoot what appeared to be a gun before he ducked inside the house. About 14 teenagers stood nearby.

Two deputies walked toward the house and the 18-year-old, Albert Mathis Jr., walked out the front door with his hands behind his back, authorities said. Deputies ordered him to raise his hands and get on the ground. He did.

Deputies discovered a black cap gun in his shorts. Mathis told deputies he did not see them and said he was shooting at his friends, according to a Sheriff's Office report.

Deputies said he had to have seen their four patrol cars and gave him a misdemeanor citation for obstructing an investigation.
