TAMPA -- A group of University of South Florida medical faculty members have received a $2.8-million federal grant to train health care professionals to better treat HIV in Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The grant, announced Friday, focuses on educating health care providers who serve minority and poor populations that are disproportionately affected by HIV, said Dr. Michael Knox, director of the University of South Florida Center for HIV Education and Research.

More than 80,000 people are living with HIV AIDS in Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Knox said there is a lack of qualified health care providers who can respond to the problem.

"There are areas where the underserved populations live, for instance, where migrant workers live, that health care providers may not be totally up to speed on the latest research," he said.

USF medical faculty members will work with health care professionals at the University of Florida, the University of Miami, University of Puerto Rico, Florida A&M University and the University of the Virgin Islands. They will also work as partners with the Florida Department of Health, Bureau of HIV/AIDS.

The Florida/Caribbean AIDS Education and Training Center will teach the health care providers through workshops, clinical training and conferences. The center also will offer clinical consultation for challenging cases.
