A fresh face for 2004?© St. Petersburg Times published July 2, 2002 Now he tells us. The former vice president told a weekend gathering of key Democratic fundraisers that the Al Gore who lost the 2000 presidential election to George W. Bush was an imposter . . . well, sort of. Gore conceded that he made the mistake of allowing himself to be programmed by consultants and influenced too much by polls and tactical maneuvering. They kept the real Al Gore in a political lockbox. Gore told fundraisers that if he decides to run for president in 2004, he won't make that mistake again. "If I had it to do over again, I'd just let it rip," Gore said. "To hell with the polls, tactics and all the rest. I would have poured out my heart and my vision for America's future." To Al Gore -- former congressman, senator, vice president of the United States and two-time presidential candidate -- has finally decided to be himself. You don't suppose Gore plans to run as a fresh face in 2004? © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
