ZEPHYRHILLS -- A young woman and a boy suffered serious injury Monday evening when their red Jeep Cherokee smashed head-on into a tree on Wire Road, north of Zephyrhills.
Another boy in the vehicle suffered minor injuries in the crash, said Zephyrhills fire Chief Robert Hartwig.
Investigators said the single-car crash happened at about 6:30 p.m. at a sharp turn in the road near Valley Oaks Golf Course. The driver, described by Hartwig as critically injured, was flown by helicopter to Lakeland Hospital. Helicopters in Tampa couldn't make the trip because of bad weather.
Both boys, about 9 or 10 years old, were taken to East Pasco Medical Center. One suffered critical injuries; the other suffered minor injuries, Hartwig said.
The Jeep had headed north on Wire Road but crossed the oncoming lane and hit a tree on the other side of the road, about 10 feet off the shoulder of the road.
State records show the Jeep Cherokee is registered to Charlotte Faye Jarred, 28, of Zephyrhills.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers continued their investigation of the accident on Monday night.
