Losses to Belles spark West Pasco Ponytails

ZEPHYRHILLS -- Losing two scrimmages to older players helped West Pasco's Ponytails (ages 11-12) in their own age group.
West Pasco, beaten by the West Pasco Belles (13-15) in last week's scrimmages, won two weekend games at the Jordan Softball Complex to advance to Monday night's DSL District 4 championship against Hernando.
The West Pasco Belles also were to play Hernando in a district title game Monday. Sunday rainouts postponed both championship games to Monday, and results of both were delayed by rain and unavailable at press time.
"They beat us, respectfully so," West Pasco Ponytails manager Kelly Skulas said of losing to the Belles. "It handed our girls a piece of humble pie."
Added coach Rusty Horn, "I think it helped quite a bit."
In the Ponytails preliminaries, West Pasco defeated Spring Hill 16-0 Friday and East Pasco 13-5 Saturday.
Winning pitcher Patricia Dobraski, Carly Mountain and Christina Skulas combined on a no-hitter in Friday's 16-0 win.
That trio struck out 16 -- Dobraski and Skulas each fanned six -- and walked six. Tenisha Dixon went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and four runs scored. Mountain chipped in with two hits and Brianna Rish walked five times and scored once.
"I think they surprised themselves with their level of play," West Pasco manager Kelly Skulas said.
"I asked them after the game, "Do you think you're that good?' And they said, "No.' "
Tosha Richards earned the win against East Pasco with four innings of scoreless relief.
Rebekah Stockowski, who had two hits and four RBIs in that contest, broke a 5-5 tie with a three-run homer in the fourth inning.
West Pasco added five runs in the fifth to pull away. Dobraski doubled and scored, and Skulas hit a two-run double.
West Pasco's Belles won two games Saturday, 13-7 over Hernando and 12-7 over East Pasco.
Winning pitcher Jaclyn Linville helped her own cause against Hernando with three hits and an RBI.
Shannon Zeitner hit a two-run double in West Pasco's three-run third and Lisa Dobraski contributed two singles and a double.
West Pasco overcame two three-run deficits to beat East Pasco. Christy Karl's three-run triple knotted the score at 3 in the second, and Linville's two-run double in the fifth helped West Pasco tie it at 6.
West Pasco scored six runs in the sixth for a 12-6 lead. Danielle Donaldson hit a go-ahead RBI triple and scored on Kalen Zeitner's single. Heather Shenk added a run-scoring single and Karl an RBI double.
Ashley Orlando earned the win against East Pasco. Orlando, who, according to coach Karen Karl, was a defensive standout at catcher in the first game, singled twice in each game.
The West Pasco Belles last won district and state championships in 2000.
West Pasco seeks a sweep of Hernando in all four age divisions in the district playoffs.
Last Tuesday, West Pasco won two district crowns. The Darlings (7-8) won their seventh consecutive district title with a 24-12 win over Hernando. The Angels (9-10) defeated Hernando 1-0 for their third straight district crown.
