By Times staff writer Seminar on West Nile virus scheduledThe Pinellas County Extension Service offers a seminar on health issues associated with the West Nile virus from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 11. Entomology experts from the University of Florida and the Florida Bureau of Laboratories will present the forum, which will cover topics including serology, mosquito surveillance and treatment, protection of animals and research at Florida Medical Entomology. West Nile virus was found in a sentinel chicken in St. Petersburg last month, the first this year. The virus, which can be transmitted when mosquitoes bite humans, causes mild flulike symptoms, but also can cause encephalitis, a swelling of the brain that can lead to brain damage or death. Center for blind needs teachersLARGO -- The Watson Center, serving the blind and visually impaired in Pinellas County, is in need of volunteers who can teach once a week for 19 weeks, from Aug. 7 to Dec. 20. Teaching experience is required, a degree is preferred, and class subject offerings are flexible.
