Taking the holiday off© St. Petersburg Times published July 5, 2002 The poor souls working on federal holidays should take comfort in a new poll by the Gallup Organization. The survey suggests that many are more exhausted after taking a vacation than they were before they left. More than half the 1,000 respondents returned home tired. One in five were "exhausted." It's difficult to feel sorry for people who have the luxury to get away, even if those mental and physical demands of vacationing are all too understandable. We work long hours before leaving town; overeat, overdrink and overspend once we get there; and then crash upon returning home because we got no sleep. The folks who voluntarily work holidays long ago figured this out. Not having the boss around gives the Dagwood Bumsteads of the world a chance to catch an extra hour's sleep. So employers can worry about one more thing over this long holiday: There will be a lot of work waiting when you return. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
