INVERNESS -- The Citrus Summer Showdown 5K on Saturday morning at Whispering Pines Park had a definite University of South Florida feel to it.

Bulls cross-country runner Andrew Smith won the men's race with a time of 15 minutes, 36 seconds, and Tara Quinn, who finished second in the nation in the 2,000 meters last spring for the Bulls, won the women's event.

"It was just a great race," Quinn said. "I wanted to come down and watch the race, then I decided to go ahead and compete."

Quinn, a native of Hamilton, Ontario, led from start to finish and won by more than one minute, finishing in 18:26.

Smith battled a tough field, which included former Notre Dame runner Sean McManus of Hernando and former Citrus High state champion Cory Presnick.

"I pretty much came in and treated this race like it was a workout," said Smith, a native of Toronto who ran 8 miles Friday while working out. "This is the first time I have ran here and used it as a training run."

McManus finished 8 seconds behind Smith and Presnick finished in 15:48, 12 seconds off the pace.

"I felt good with my race, but I just ran into some better guys today," Presnick said. "Still, I am 30 seconds ahead of where I was last year, so I am pleased."

Tallahassee's Ryan Deak and Tyrone Bell rounded out the top five overall on the men's side. Deak was the top high school finisher in the event.

On the women's side, Carol Postigo (19:33), Tara Gruber (20:36), Jacki Waller (20:48) and Jo Smith (21:25) rounded out the top five behind Quinn.
