Gulf low could become tropical
By Times staff writer Officials are watching an area of low pressure above the Gulf of Mexico that has the potential to develop into a tropical depression. The weather system was circulating Sunday in the center of the Gulf, south of New Orleans and north of the Yucatan Peninsula, drifting west at 5-10 mph. The combination of a low pressure system above warm water can lead to a tropical depression. Forecasters said on its current track it would reach an area near the border of Mexico and Texas late Tuesday or early Wednesday. "Whenever you have something like that, you just have to watch it closely," said Karl Loeper, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Ruskin. An Air Force reserve reconnaissance plane will fly out to monitor the pattern, officials said. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
