Phillies' Buchholz on strikeout roll

When Taylor Buchholz takes the mound, opponents usually take a seat.

The 20-year-old right-hander struck out a career-high 13 batters to lead Clearwater to a 3-2 victory at Lakeland on Tuesday.

Buchholz struck out the side in the first, fifth and seventh innings. He also struck out four of the last five batters he faced before being relieved to start the eighth.

It was the second double-digit strikeout performance of Buchholz's career, the first coming last July when he struck out 12 while playing for Lakewood, the Phillies' low Class A affiliate.

This season, Buchholz is 8-5 and leads the FSL with 117 strikeouts in 126 innings.

TAMPA: A few weeks after moving up to Double-A Norwich, right-handed pitcher Jason Arnold and outfielder John Ford-Griffin made a different kind of move.

This time their destination was another organization.

Arnold and Ford-Griffin, the Yankees' top two draft picks in 2001 who both spent the first half of this season with Tampa, were part of a three-team trade involving Oakland and Detroit.

The Yankees acquired pitcher Jeff Weaver from Detroit and sent Arnold, Ford-Griffin and pitcher Ted Lilly to Oakland. The A's sent first baseman Carlos Pena to Detroit.

DUNEDIN: In Baseball America's midseason report, it listed second baseman Dominic Rich as making the most improvement in the Blue Jays farm system.

Rich, a former Auburn player who was the Jays' second-round pick in 2001, broke out of an early slump in April to lead the FSL in hits (120). He's also second in average (.348), on-base percentage (.431) and runs scored (66).

ALUMNI UPDATE: Fort Myers outfielder Josh Rabe successfully reached base for the 64th game in a row in a doubleheader against Dunedin. It is the longest streak in the minors since former Dunedin player Casey Blake reached base in 60 straight games in 1998.

DID YOU KNOW? Jose Reyes, a minor-league shortstop with the Mets who was MVP of the Futures Game on Sunday, played in the FSL All-Star game in Dunedin three weeks ago. Reyes, 19, who now plays for Double-A Binghamton, was the youngest player in the FSL.
