LARGO -- A 60-year-old man was severely burned over most of his body Thursday evening at his home, and police were investigating how it happened.

Whittington Amyan, who lives at 3080 19th Place SW, was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital with third-degree burns, police said. He was in critical condition.

About 6:45 p.m., three neighbors noticed smoke coming from Amyan's garage. Running to the garage, they found Amyan on fire inside, said Largo police spokesman Brandon Graham.

The neighbors called 911 and sprayed water on Amyan with a garden hose. Firefighters arrived and extinguished a small fire in the garage.

Largo police were investigating. Detectives said a note was found at the scene, but they could provide no further details Thursday about how Amyan was burned.
