Northeast advanced to sectional play next weekend at Interbay after capturing the District 5 All-Stars Major baseball championship late Thursday night. Playing in its fourth game of the tournament, Northeast defeated Southwest 7-4 for the second time in three games to claim the title.

A three-run home run by Nick Gaines and a two-run blast by Travis Smith helped Northeast blow the game open in the first. Smith also scored two runs and finished the night with two hits. Gaines was the winning pitcher.

JUNIOR SOFTBALL: On a wet and soggy field late Thursday, Seminole defended its District 5 title with a 9-8 win over Cross Bayou.

Leading by one run in the sixth, Cross Bayou advanced the tying run to third, but pitcher Kristi Belvedere sat down the next two batters in a row. Katie Marshall ended the game with a spectacular game-saving catch in the right-centerfield gap.

Belvedere picked up the win in relief after starter Ashley Volentine pitched the first four innings, striking out five.

Brittney Warren had three hits and scored twice. Catcher Christina Barshall had another strong defensive game.

Seminole advances to the sectional tournament begining next week at Interbay.

JUNIOR BASEBALL: Northeast doubled up Pinellas Park National 6-3 on Friday in District 5.

Chris Hamm helped Northeast score three runs in the first by squeezing in the first of his two RBIs with a bunt. Ryan Luker tossed a complete game, striking out six. Luker also scored two runs. Northeast advances to the losers bracket final today at 10 a.m.

Both Junior and Senior baseball games scheduled for today have been moved to Northeast Little League located at 875 62nd Ave. N.
