Beaches notebook
By Times staff writer GulfportGulfport received a $50,000 grant from the Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program for Clymer Park, along Beach Boulevard, south of Gulfport Boulevard. The grant will cover the cost of replacing the park's two covered bridges, installing irrigation, making improvements to the fountain and planting trees. City Manager Bob Lee said initially the program turned down the city's application. He said the applications for the grant are scored, with the top 27 scorers receiving the grant. Gulfport tied for 27th place with two other cities. Because Gulfport is a recipient of the grant in a previous year, the city was knocked to 29th place. But state Rep. Charlie Justice stepped in and argued that to be fair, the program should extend the number of grants to cover the tie, and it did. * * * For the next stage of the 49th Street redevelopment project, residents and business owners are encouraged to attend a public workshop 6 p.m. Wednesday in City Council chambers. Architecture Concepts will present a streetscape rendering for the 49th Street corridor, and a rendering for a new public service building for the Bay Machine site. Armed with comments from this workshop and future meetings, the architects ultimately will create two final streetscape renderings from which the City Council, under the advisement of the Economic Redevelopment Advisory Committee, can choose.
