ST. PETERSBURG -- Police are seeking the public's help in a hit-and-run accident that killed a pedestrian Saturday night on Fourth Street S.

Investigators are looking for the driver of a white cargo van, probably with damage to the front driver's side and possibly the front fender, police spokesman Jim Giambruno said.

Motorists who witnessed the accident told police they could not see any lettering on the van, he said.

The van has double doors in the rear, and the license plate is mounted on one of the doors, he said.

Fred G. Simerson, 36, of 1423 Fourth St. S, Apartment 725, was crossing the street in the middle of the 1300 block at 7:34 p.m. when he was struck by the van, police said. He was pronounced dead at Bayfront Medical Center at 7:55 p.m.

Anyone with information should call the police traffic division at (727) 893-7116 during business hours or the non-emergency dispatch number, (727) 893-7780, any time.
