Dog days of summer

Pooches of every sort strut their stuff this weekend at several competitions at the Florida State Fairgrounds.

Terriers -- from Airedales to West Highland Whites -- are the stars today from noon to 7 p.m. at a show sponsored by the Tampa Bay Terrier Club under American Kennel Club rules. Admission is free.

The Tampa Bay Kennel Club hosts three days of shows beginning Friday for all breeds. Above, Lady, an Old English Sheepdog, cleared a hurdle in the local competition in 1998. Gates open at 7:30 a.m., and judging begins at 8:30 a.m. Friday through Sunday. Daily admission is $3 adults, $1 seniors and children younger than 12.

All the shows are at the Florida State Fairgrounds Health Expo and Entertainment halls, U.S. 301 off Interstate 4, Tampa. Parking is $5; enter by Orient Road gate. For more information, call (813) 621-7821.

The Battle of Heritage Village

Some of the most famous battles of the Civil War -- Gettysburg, Manassas, Atlanta -- were fought in July, so perhaps it is fitting that the folks at Heritage Village in Largo pick this month each year for a re-enactment of a Union and Confederate skirmish.

Members of two re-enactment groups, the USS Ottawa and the 79th N.Y. Highlanders, fire up their cannons at 2 p.m. Saturday for an hourlong battle, including mounted re-enactors. George Moore of Brooksville, above, rode his horse Spock in the 1996 skirmish.

But the day includes more than mock fighting.

The activities, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., include demonstrations of weaving, saltmaking, blacksmithing and other necessities of 19th century life; a historical presentation by Wendy Knott-Comer portraying Elizabeth Campbell McMullen, wife of James P. McMullen, captain of the Clearwater Guard during the Civil War; storytelling by Oscar Robinson; historic home tours; children's games and displays of letters, weapons and other memorabilia.

Admission and parking are free.

Heritage Village is at 11909 125th St. N, Largo. For information, call (727) 582-2123.
