Gaither High gymnast to join Sooners team

CARROLLWOOD -- Gaither High graduate Kelly Haggerty has earned a scholarship to the University of Oklahoma.

The Sooners' head coach, Steve Nunno, was the personal coach of Olympic medalist Shannon Miller.

Although Nunno had been recruiting Haggerty before the May 17-19 college-bound national gymnastics meet in Oklahoma, her top-10 performance at the meet solidified her offer from Nunno.

"I really went into a zone in that meet in May placing in the top 10 in every event," Haggerty said. "That was my best performance ever in competition. I scored above 9s in all events. I will miss some of the teachers at Gaither, but I am ready to go and I really look forward to being part of the Sooners team."

Haggerty heads to school Aug. 19 and will begin practice with the team immediately. She plans to seek a degree in business accounting.
