Ex-Gator tennis star pulls upset
Jessica Lehnhoff, in her rookie season as a pro after finishing as the runner-up in the NCAA Tournament in May, beat eighth-seeded Ansley Cargill 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the Long Island Tennis Classic in Oyster Bay, N.Y.
Lehnhoff, 22, who played at Florida, has won one singles title and been part of three doubles champions during her first year on the WTA Tour.
Other winners included No.2 seed Yoon-Jeong Cho and No.6 seed Seda Noorlander.

Martina Hingis, sidelined since ankle surgery May20, might try to return for the U.S. Open. ... Corretja has an abdominal muscle strain that forced him to pull out of his doubles match Wednesday. ... Defending champion Carlos Moya reached the quarterfinals of the Croatia Open in Umag, beating Oliver Gross 6-2, 6-3.
HORSES: Wood Memorial winner Buddha was declared out of the Aug.24 Travers Stakes. H. James Bond, who trains Buddha, said the horse has a pulled muscle "up in his rear" and does not know how the injury occurred. ... Royal Fact saved ground on the rail and beat Victor Carrero by three-quarters of a length in the feature at Belmont. ... Rocky Bar led all the way in winning the feature at Hollywood Park by 2 lengths over With Iris.
COLLEGES: Maryland basketball player Juan Dixon and Wake Forest tennis player Bea Bielik were named ACC athletes of the year. Dixon led Maryland to the national title as a senior. Bielik won the NCAA singles title as a junior. ... Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles said his new diet has helped in his fight against prostate cancer. He will decide within 10-14 days what treatment to pursue. ... Memphis linebacker Albert Means, the focus of an NCAA investigation into improper recruiting at Alabama, was declared academically ineligible.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Auburn coach Cliff Ellis said there was nothing improper about a letter he sent to Bobby Lowder, an influential trustee. He sought a raise, improved facilities, two staffers and a new compliance director among 13 other things. He got the raise and much of the rest. ... Gillian Goring, part of Connecticut's women's recruiting class, was declared academically ineligible, but an appeal will be filed over a grade that was not included in her transcript.
SWIMMING: Grant Hackett broke his 400-meter free short-course world record in Sydney. He finished in 3:34.58, .43 seconds ahead of the previous mark. ... Chris Thompson set a meet record of 8:00.82 in the 800 free at the Janet Evans Invitational in Los Angeles. It was .54 seconds ahead of the previous mark.
CYCLING: Kirk O'Bee was suspended for a year by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency after testing positive for anabolic steroids.
TRACK: Bea Simoka took the lead after the second of five events then held on to win the Women's Pentathlon World Championships in Palo Alto, Calif. Simoka finished with 5,568 points, 60 more than Szuzsa Voros. ... British discus-record holder Perriss Wilkins was banned for two years after testing positive for anabolic steroids.
OBITUARY: Kip Taylor, the former Michigan football player who scored the first touchdown at Michigan Stadium and later coached Oregon State, died. He was 94. ... Morris "Snake" Bailey, an All-Southwest Conference receiver at TCU who played one season in the CFL, died late Wednesday. He was 77.
