Sports: No more top bunk for Wake Forest TB

Williams, second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in rushing yards (1,018) last season, recently hopped off the top bunk in his dorm room and landed poorly, breaking his left foot.

"I was hoping it was just a bruise, but I pretty much knew it was broken," he said with a disappointed glance at his foot, which is encased in a walking boot.

Demon Deacon officials said Williams could miss 2-3 games, but he thinks not. He said he would "be back sooner than anybody expects."

SCHEDULE TALK: North Carolina State quarterback Philip Rivers isn't about to apologize for his team's less-than-daunting non-conference schedule. The Wolfpack, with 12 starters returning from a team that finished 7-5, play a pair of Division I-AA teams, East Tennessee State and UMass.

"Certainly, there's a couple of games that are looked at as not being very good teams, but if you approach it like that, those are the type of teams that slip up and get after you," the junior said.

GOOD HANDS: Virginia senior receiver Billy McMullen led the ACC with 83 catches for 1,060 yards and 12 touchdowns to earn third-team All-America honors from Football News. What can he do for an encore?

A lot, he said.

"I'm the type of player who critiques myself really hard," he said. "People said I did this and that, but I see things in my game that I can work on. I don't see that hype. I took this whole offseason to work on things like my blocking, coming off the ball harder and catching the ball better."

GIVE HIM A HAND: North Carolina senior cornerback Michael Waddell earned second-team All-ACC honors thanks largely to finishing second in the league with 41 passes broken up. But even with that many touches, he had no interceptions in the regular season.

"I was talking to a friend the other day and he said, 'How in the world did you make All-ACC without an interception?' " Waddell said. "I don't know."

HE SAID IT: "We absolutely do not talk about it. It's not something we dwell on or think about. The only time I talk about it is when I'm talking to the media or students on campus who want to know, 'Are you going to win a game?' " -- Duke junior tailback Chris Douglas on his team's 23-game losing streak.
