Giants sign Collins to 2-year extension

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The Giants signed quarterback Kerry Collins through the 2004 season.

Collins, who would have become a free agent after this season, will earn $15.4-million during the next three seasons. The deal creates enough salary-cap room for the Giants to re-sign his backup, Jason Garrett.

Collins will receive a $5.85-million bonus, but his salary this year will drop to $650,000. During the next two seasons, he will earn a combined $8-million to $9-million.

BEARS: Offensive tackle Marc Colombo, a first-round draft pick, agreed to a five-year, $5.6-million deal. The team also agreed to three-year deals with Florida defensive end Alex Brown, a fourth-round pick, linebacker Bryan Knight, running back Adrian Peterson, receiver Jamin Elliott and tight end Bryan Fletcher.

BENGALS: Kicker Travis Dorsch, a fourth-round pick, agreed to a three-year deal.

BRONCOS: Denver waived defensive end Paul Toviessi and guard Jay Humphrey and signed Swedish kicker Ola Kimrin.

COLTS: Running back Edgerrin James was fined $500 and his driver's license was suspended for a month. James was clocked at 111 mph in a 60 mph zone May8 in Immokalee.

COWBOYS: Dallas signed draft picks Tyson Walter, DeVeren Johnson and Bob Slowikowski.

DOLPHINS: Receivers Joey Getherall and Shawn Terry were released.

EAGLES: Florida cornerback Lito Sheppard, a first-round pick, signed a five-year deal worth $5.7-million. Also, receiver Antonio Freeman's agent, Joel Segal, said he is negotiating with the team.

JAGUARS: Florida offensive lineman Mike Pearson, a second-round pick, signed a four-year deal worth 3.06-million.

JETS: Guard Jonathan Goodwin, a fifth-round pick, signed along with free-agent receiver Kahmal Roy.

PACKERS: A protection order against running back Ahman Green, obtained by his wife, was dropped. Shalynn Green asked the court to dismiss the order, which required him to stay away from her home and their two children's day care center.

PANTHERS: Receiver Patrick Jeffers, who has had five knee operations during the past two years, is not expected to pass the team's physical Friday and won't practice until he does, coach John Fox said.

RAVENS: Frederick Bouchat is not owed money despite a jury finding the team and league stole his design for team's team logo. A new jury said merchandise sales didn't depend on the logo.

REDSKINS: Free-agent defensive lineman Daryl Gardener is scheduled to talk with team officials today. Also, cornerback and special-teams player Kato Serwanga had surgery on his right knee and will miss 2-3 months.

SAINTS: Cornerback Kevin Mathis, returning from a neck injury, was cut after failing a physical. Cornerback Keyuo Craver, a fourth-round pick, signed.

STEELERS: Defensive end Aaron Smith avoided a holdout by agreeing to a five-year extension worth $24-million. Smith has 13 sacks in the past three seasons and is considered a key to the team's pass rush.

Ariko Iso was hired as an assistant athletic trainer, making her the NFL's first full-time female trainer. Iso spent the past five seasons as the head football trainer at Portland State. She interned at the Steelers' past two training camps. She will be responsible for assisting Steelers trainer John Norwig and the team's medical staff in all training areas.

McCONKEY AWARD UPHELD: A New Jersey appellate court upheld a $6.06-million judgment for former Giants receiver Phil McConkey. McConkey was assured the brokerage firm he took a job with was not a takeover target. It was taken over seven months later, and he lost his job.
