Craig Shoemaker has become synonymous in comedy circles with The Lovemaster, his baritone mocking of male pickup artistes. The bit was turned into a feature film (costarring George Wendt) of the same name in 1998, winning the Independent Film Festival best picture award in Los Angeles.
In 2001, Shoemaker got personal with his autobiographical theater piece, Who's Your Daddy?, a funny, poignant look at his lifelong pursuit to find a father figure.
Shoemaker also was in Scream 2, hosted the ABC special Real Funny and frequently appears on Hollywood Squares. He performs five shows this weekend at Side Splitters Comedy Club: 8 and 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 8:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $16 for all shows.
Side Splitters is in Cascades Plaza, 12938 N Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa. For information or reservations, call (813) 960-1197.
Catch a rising star
St. Petersburg singer-songwriter John Land keeps it simple on Found, his debut disc. Land cites innovative folkie Richard Thompson as an influence and the sound is similar on Celtic-tinged numbers such as The Faire and I Met A Lass.
Land picks a guitar as nicely as he croons. He's a darned good songwriter, too, with keen insights into seduction, workplace crushes, jealousy, spiritual matters, even horses. In other words, Land runs the gamut, gives it his all, and leaves you satisfied.
Good news: Land's currently recording a follow-up disc in Nashville, but this weekend, catch him right here.
John Land performs at 7 p.m. Friday at Java Jane, 29081/2 Beach Blvd. S, Gulfport. Free.
