ST. LOUIS -- Jim Edmonds, Tino Martinez and Eduardo Perez homered, powering the Cardinals to an 8-4 victory Friday night over the Cubs.

The Cardinals, who took a five-game lead in the Central over the Reds, have dominated the Cubs at home. St. Louis has won 17 of the past 19 between the teams at Busch Stadium and has beaten Chicago five straight overall.

"The best way to describe this team is I got outmanaged, we got outcoached and the players got outplayed," Chicago manager Bruce Kimm said. "We got beat in all phases."

Chuck Finley, acquired July 19 in a trade with Cleveland, won in his Busch Stadium debut before the largest crowd of the season, 48,730. Edgar Renteria got two hits to reach 1,000.

Finley gave up three runs and five hits in six innings, struck out seven and walked none. After allowing a leadoff home run to Mark Bellhorn, Finley shut out the Cubs until Chris Stynes hit a two-run homer with two outs in the sixth that cut the St. Louis lead to 5-3.

PHILLIES 3, BRAVES 2: Gary Sheffield grounded out with the bases loaded to end the game, allowing visiting Philadelphia to hang on.

The Phillies, playing a night game for the first time in a week, won their fourth in a row. It's their longest streak since June 7-10, when they won four in a row in interleague play.

The Braves lost for the second time in 10 games and still have the best record in the majors at 66-37.

Earlier, Sheffield singled to extend his team-record on-base streak to 51 games. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the longest streak since 1975 was Mark McGwire's 62 in 1995-96.

DODGERS 11, GIANTS 6: Tyler Houston went 4-for-4 and drove in four runs in his debut for visiting Los Angeles. Houston, acquired Tuesday from the Brewers, hit a two-run triple in the first.

Adrian Beltre had four RBIs and four hits. Mark Grudzielanek also had four hits for the Dodgers, who had 18.

Hideo Nomo improved to 7-0 in eight starts in San Francisco despite one of his worst outings of the year. He allowed five runs and nine hits in seven innings and won for the first time since July1, a span of five starts.

METS 3, REDS 2: Mo Vaughn singled in the winning run with two outs in the ninth for host New York.

After Vaughn sent John Riedling's first pitch back up the middle, Rey Ordonez ran home as the screaming Merengue Night crowd made Shea Stadium shake.

Ordonez led off the ninth with a single. Pinch-hitter Marco Scutaro advanced him with a sacrifice bunt and Roberto Alomar was walked intentionally.

ASTROS 4, PIRATES 3: Julio Lugo's winning hit in the ninth bailed out Houston closer Billy Wagner, who allowed a tying homer to Aramis Ramirez in the top of the inning. Brad Ausmus walked with one out against Scott Sauerbeck and moved to second on a groundout. Lugo then singled to center. Daryle Ward hit a two-run homer in the eighth to give the Astros a 3-2 lead but Ramirez tied it with his eighth homer of the season.

D'BACKS 12, PADRES 0: Randy Johnson returned to form, pitching four-hit ball for seven innings for host Arizona. Johnson was coming off his worst game of the season, an eight-hit, eight-run, six-walk performance Sunday in which he lasted just five innings in the Padres' 11-9 win. Arizona centerfielder Steve Finley left after being hit in the left elbow with a pitch in the seventh. He had a bone bruise and is day to day.

EXPOS 6, MARLINS 5 (10): Jose Vidro hit a leadoff home run in the 10th, lifting host Montreal. Vidro, hitless in his first four at-bats after missing five straight starts because of soreness in his lower back, connected off Vladimir Nunez.

BREWERS 10, ROCKIES 3: Mark Loretta hit his first grand slam and Ben Sheets won for the second time in 15 starts for host Milwaukee. Loretta's slam came in the third off Denny Stark. It followed singles by Richie Sexson and Matt Stairs and a walk to Jose Hernandez and gave Sheets a 6-0 lead.
