LUTZ: With about 50 shoppers waiting at the door, a huge Publix supermarket opened Thursday near the apex of Florida and Nebraska avenues. It replaced a Publix that had closed the night before at 15025 N Florida Ave., just north of Bearss Avenue.
Who will move into the space vacated by the old Publix is unknown.
"We're talking to three different tenants currently, but nothing of substance has come of that," said Loren Pollack, president of the Clearwater-based Stuart S. Golding Co., which manages that shopping center.
The new Publix, with 61,000 square feet, is one of the largest among the chain's 704 stores. It a rare free-standing supermarket, partly shrouded by oaks. It has 230 employees, a mezzanine, a bakery with a separate entrance, and a drive-through pharmacy. Its hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. For information, call 264-5590.
