LUTZ -- Picture U.S. 41 lined with people, large and small, waving American flags, large and small.

That's the vision the Lutz-Land O'Lakes Woman's Club has for this coming Sept. 11, to mark the anniversary of last year's terrorist attacks.

Everyone's invited, said the club's president, Marilyn Wannamaker.

"Tell 'em to bring a flag and wave it as long as they want," she said.

The women envision that the Lutz portion of the event would be focused near Lutz's old downtown at Lutz-Lake Fern Road, but on the east side of U.S. 41 because a sidewalk is there, Mrs. Wannamaker said.

Dora Bean, who is heading up the Land O'Lakes portion of it, said members are thinking of waving flags near the Wal-Mart store on State Road 54, east of U.S. 41.

The Land O'Lakes members are thinking of waving flags in the morning, commemorating the time of the attacks, Mrs. Bean said. The Lutz members are thinking of 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. to show the flag during U.S. 41's evening rush hour, Mrs. Wannamaker said. In addition, children would be out of school and available to participate, she said.

But the idea is young, and plans could develop, the women said.

It originated from the Bayshore Patriots, a group founded by three women in the same aerobics class. They decided last September to wave American flags every Friday afternoon along Bayshore Boulevard. They hope to line Bayshore with flag-wavers on Sept. 11 as well.

"We saw where they were going to do it on Bayshore Boulevard," Mrs. Wannamaker said. "We didn't want to drive all the way down to Bayshore, so we thought we'd do it on Highway 41."
