Highs and Lows

HIGHS

ERNIE ELS: Before Tiger, he was the golden child. Remember, to go with his three majors, he is the only player to be runner-up in three straight majors -- two of those to Woods. And though his British Open title was his first PGA Tour victory with Woods in the field since 1997, it doesn't diminish that the player known as the Big Easy has made a major mark, unlike some others, in the sport.

MICHAEL SCHUMACHER: Regarded by many as the best race car driver in the world, he clinched his record fifth Formula One title Sunday at the French Grand Prix. Not bad for a 33-year old.

LOWS

22-4: Welcome to our nightmare known as the Rays.

JOHN SWOFFORD: The Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner says he's relieved because he's no longer coordinating the Bowl Championship Series standings. How does he think the rest of us feel, still stuck with this convoluted system?
