DADE CITY -- Russell Brause knew something wasn't right.

The 76-year-old man was riding his bicycle recently through the Seven Acres RV Park, at 16731 U.S. 301, when he noticed a broken window on a neighbor's home.

He went searching and found at least six other homes in the neighborhood had been broken into as well, including one vehicle. Most residents in the 192-unit park are snowbirds, away up North for the summer.

"Somebody got wind of the fact that not many people are down here in the summer months (and broke in)," Brause said. "It was rather shocking to say the least. It's not something that happens every day."

Pasco sheriff's investigators told Brause that nothing appeared stolen from any of the burglarized homes, though the intruders had rifled through some drawers and belongings. But deputies said the perpetrators appeared to have moved expensive items such as televisions and furniture together in certain homes, possibly for easier removal on a return visit.

"I moved out of St. Petersburg, where I had iron bars, so I could be where it's safe," Brause said. "Then I found out we're not safe here, either."

Pasco County sheriff's spokesman Kevin Doll said deputies are investigating the break-ins, but he wouldn't comment on measures the department will take to stop similar incidents in the future.

Brause, meanwhile, said he planned to ask the park's owner to beef up security.

"It would make anyone upset," Brause said. "(Those people) have a lovely place here. To have someone destroy it while they're gone is not a nice feeling."
