1. Sunshine State -- Maverick filmmaker John Sayles casts his sharp eye on Florida's economic development and the bulldozing of the state's personality. A sparkling ensemble cast includes Angela Bassett, Edie Falco, Timothy Hutton and Mary Steenburgen.
2. Signs -- Mel Gibson protects his family from alien invasion, but this is more contemplative science fiction than Independence Day. Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan with the same creepy elan displayed in The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable.
3. Road to Perdition -- Tom Hanks isn't convincing as a 1930s mob assassin, but the American Beauty team of director Sam Mendes and cinematographer Conrad Hall creates a moody underworld that's tough to shake.
4. The Country Bears -- A bear of constant sorrow (voice of Haley Joel Osment) reunites his favorite bluegrass-rock band in a surprisingly limber musical-comedy for all ages.
5. Stuart Little 2 -- Lively sight gags and spirited voiceovers by Michael J. Fox, Melanie Griffith and James Woods turn this sequel about an adopted talking mouse into a worthwhile family treat.
