School starts on Aug. 12 in Pasco County, but those who want to get a step up and perhaps allay some of those back-to-school jitters should plan on attending County Wide Registration Days on Tuesday for middle and high school students and Wednesday for elementary school students.

Maybe you're thinking "Why bother?" since your child is already registered for school. Don't let the title "Registration Day" fool you. A better term for the countywide event might be "Meet the Teacher Day" or "School Tour Day."

Although some students -- particularly those who are new to the county -- might use these as a chance to register for school, these days are set aside for students to get a brief preview of the academic year to come.

Elementary students will have the opportunity to meet their teacher and administrators as well as some of their classmates. Those who are new to the school are encouraged to take a tour and become familiar with their school environment before the first day of classes. Some teachers will have their school supply list available so parents can budget and not be caught in the back-to-school rush at the local stores. This is also a good time to sign up for parent organizations or as a school volunteer. Background checks are mandatory for all school volunteers, so the sooner you fill out that paper work, the sooner you can lend a hand.

School schedules will be available at this time for middle and high school students. Any classroom fees that are due can be paid that day, as well as fees for lockers and student parking spaces. Information for many student organizations also is available at this time, as well as information for parents about volunteer opportunities and parent organizations.

Day and evening hours are available at many schools. Those planning to attend might want to call the school of their choice for exact times.
