    Group sued by Bush disbands

TALLAHASSEE -- Gov. Jeb Bush thanked a Republican lawmaker Monday for disbanding a South Florida fundraising organization that used Bush's name to launch personal attacks against Janet Reno.

The political action committee, Americans for Jeb Bush, had distributed fundraising letters urging supporters to "Stop Janet Reno," one of three Democratic candidates for governor.

Among the literature included with the group's letters and on a link on its Web site was an article raising Reno's sex life as an issue. The article also said that when Reno was U.S. attorney general her Justice Department didn't pursue prosecutions of Arab terrorists, which "came home to roost on Sept. 11."

State Rep. Gus Barreiro, R-Miami, said he sent a letter Friday to Bush saying he would resign as the group's honorary chairman and disband the organization.

The decision comes after Bush sued the PAC July 30, saying the group was committing a trademark violation by seeking profits by using the governor's name. The lawsuit is being dropped, Bush campaign spokesman Todd Harris said.
