In politics and sandwiches, Hubert H. Humphrey was an all-inclusive sort of guy.

In politics and sandwiches, Hubert H. Humphrey was an all-inclusive sort of guy.

His favorite sandwich was peanut butter, bologna, cheddar cheese, lettuce and mayonnaise on toasted bread with ketchup on the side.

He'd be in good company with St. Petersburg Times readers who e-mailed their favorite peanut butter sandwich combinations after reading a story about the all-American bread spread last week. Many of them would say Humphrey left off the onions. Or the sliced tomatoes.

Some obsessions:

PB&J and pretzels, Rick Boling, Land O'Lakes.

Crunchy peanut butter, honey, wheat germ and grapes on toasted whole wheat pita, Jocelyn Zimmet, Palm Harbor.

Peanut butter, bacon and lettuce, from a number of readers.

Peanut butter and onions, Vidalia or Bermuda, on dark pumpernickel or rye, from several readers.

Peanut butter on wheat bread dipped into Dean's French onion dip, Mark Peterson, Clearwater (told on by wife Peggy).

Peanut butter, thinly sliced apples, alfalfa sprouts on whole wheat, from Sandy Hawes, Zephyrhills (from Hawes' "whole wheat food co-op days").

Peanut butter with dill pickles (not kosher, too strong) or bread-and-butter pickles, Jim Branch, Seminole, and Cheryl Lee, Tarpon Springs.

Peanut butter and American cheese, Clint Walker, Dunedin, and Miranda Austin, Clearwater. (Miranda likes hers microwaved so the cheese and peanut butter meld.)

Hamburger with peanut butter, Andrea MacTaggert, St. Petersburg.

Peanut butter with crushed pineapple, Jim Ralph, Inverness.

Peanut butter, thinly sliced cucumber and lettuce on 12-grain bread. Suzanne M. Smith, St. Petersburg.

Peanut butter with a thin layer of maple syrup. "Especially tasty with a bowl of chil," writes K. Haynes, Clearwater.

To each his own peanut butter sandwich, that's for sure.
