Clemens shows little sign of age

NEW YORK -- Pitching at 40 years old for the first time, Roger Clemens looked almost as good as ever.

Clemens came off the disabled list to pitch seven sharp innings, getting home run support from Jorge Posada and Derek Jeter as the Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 6-2 Wednesday night.

Driving off the mound with strength and purpose, Clemens showed no ill effects of the injured right groin that kept him out since July 13. He struck out eight in his 289th victory, passing Tommy John for 21st place on the career list.

Posada drove in four with a three-run homer and abases-loaded walk, and Jeter went deep for the first time in a month.

Clemens, who turned 40 on Sunday, gave up two runs and six hits, walking one. He threw 105 pitches, 73 for strikes, and won for the first time in six starts since beating San Francisco on June 9.

Jays rookie hits 3 homers in loss

TORONTO -- Chris Woodward hit three home runs for the Blue Jays, but Dan Wilson homered in the 10th to lift the Seattle Mariners to a 5-4 win Wednesday night.

Woodward, who started the day with eight home runs in 148 at-bats, had the first multi-homer game of his career.

The rookie shortstop homered in three straight at-bats, including a tying shot off closer Kazuhiro Sasaki with one out in the ninth.

A'S 3, RED SOX 2: Terrence Long reached over the right-centerfield wall into the Boston bullpen to rob Manny Ramirez of a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth to preserve a win for visiting Oakland.

RANGERS 7, TIGERS 2 (11): Kevin Mench hit a tiebreaking single and Alex Rodriguez added a two-run double in Texas' five-run 11th. The Rangers' Travis Hafner tied it at 2 in the fourth with his first career hit, a run-scoring triple to the flag pole in left-center.

WHITE SOX 7, ANGELS 6: Royce Clayton hit a winning single with one out in the ninth as host Chicago rallied from a 6-2 deficit.

ORIOLES 6, TWINS 4: Gary Matthews had three hits and two RBIs, and Scott Erickson earned his second win since April 28 as host Baltimore handed Minnesota its third straight loss.
