1. Sunshine State -- Maverick filmmaker John Sayles casts his sharp eye on Florida's economic development and the bulldozing of the state's personality. A sparkling ensemble cast includes Angela Bassett, Edie Falco, Timothy Hutton and Mary Steenburgen.

2. Signs -- Mel Gibson protects his family from alien invasion, but this is more contemplative science fiction than Independence Day. Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan with the same creepy elan displayed in The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable.

3. Tadpole -- A bright teenager (Aaron Stanford) has a crush on his stepmother (Sigourney Weaver) and a sexual fling with her friend (Bebe Neuwirth). Not as naughty as the scenario suggests, but a nice little comedy.

4. Road to Perdition -- Tom Hanks isn't convincing as a 1930s mob assassin, but the American Beauty team of director Sam Mendes and cinematographer Conrad Hall creates a moody underworld that's tough to shake.

5. The Country Bears -- A bear of constant sorrow (voice of Haley Joel Osment) reunites his favorite bluegrass-rock band in a surprisingly limber musical-comedy for all ages.
