Three political forums this week will introduce local voters to County Commission candidates, with two dedicated to the open seat representing north Hillsborough County.
Six candidates are seeking election to the seat, currently held by Jim Norman. Monday night, the first forum is scheduled for 6:30 at Temple Terrace's Lightfoot Recreation Center, 10901 N 56th St. (at Whiteway Drive). It's being sponsored by the Compass Project, a local nonpartisan group seeking to identify knowledgeable, principled candidates.
Thursday night, the same candidates are to meet again at 7 at McKitrick Elementary School, 5503 Lutz-Lake Fern Road, just east of the Suncoast Parkway. That event is being sponsored by the Lutz and Keystone civic associations, and is to be moderated by the League of Women Voters.
Republicans are to choose a nominee for the District 2 seat on Sept. 10 from among Jim Davison, Ken Hagan, Denise Lasher and Denise "Dee" Layne. The winner will face Democratic nominee Ronald Dyser and independent Rod Gaudin in November.
The Town & Country Alliance will kick off its 2002 Political Forum Series at 7 p.m. Monday at the Lutheran Church of Our Saviour, 8401 W Hillsborough Ave. Primary election candidates for County Commission Districts 1, 5 and 7 will speak.
