Miami fullback rests his sore knee

CORAL GABLES -- Miami fullback Kyle Cobia sat out practice Sunday with an injured left knee, possibly dealing the top-ranked Hurricanes another setback in their running game.

Cobia hurt his knee Saturday, and the team was awaiting test results to determine the extent of the injury. Cobia jogged lightly on the sideline Sunday.

To add depth to the position, the team moved wide receiver Jason Geathers to tailback.

INJURY REPORT: Three defensive backs who had cramps and dehydration toward the end of Saturday's practice (cornerback Al Marshall, cornerback Antrel Rolle and cornerback Mo Sikes) returned. ... Tailback Jarrett Payton (back spasms) was held out. ... Defensive end Jerome McDougle was limited with a strained pectoral muscle.

Bulls start hitting

TAMPA -- South Florida put the pads on Sunday for the first time in more than four months.

"Five months without pads on and it showed," coach Jim Leavitt said. "But that's to be expected."

The highlight of the afternoon -- USF had one session Sunday after three consecutive two-a-days -- was a goal-line drill in which the offense outplayed the defense.

FEELING FRISKY: During a high-intensity eight-on-eight drill, a couple of skirmishes broke out.

"The guys want to hit but we can't have that, no question," Leavitt said. "But it happens."

LOOKING GOOD: Sophomore wide receiver Brian Fisher, a quarterback in high school, lined up behind center and scored on a 3-yard keeper during the goal-line drill.

INJURY REPORT: Receiver Bruce Gipson sprained his ankle attempting to make a catch. He could be ready for the Aug. 29 opener against FAU. ... Freshman kicker Gilbert Montelongo injured his left (nonkicking) foot Saturday during a shuttle drill and will have it evaluated today.

Around the nation

KANSAS: Harrison Hill, a senior wide receiver, left the team after continuing to suffer from dehydration.

MARSHALL: Josh Cordell, scheduled to start at nose tackle, left the team for personal reasons.

N.C. STATE: Senior tailback Cotra Jackson, senior defensive end Terrence Chapman, sophomore free safety J.J. Jones and fifth-year senior tailback Carlos Doggett are academically ineligible.
