Sosa extends rampage

DENVER -- However Sammy Sosa decided to leave Denver -- on the team charter or, more likely, a private jet -- the Colorado Rockies were glad to see him go.

Sosa hit a grand slam and drove in five as the Chicago Cubs beat the Rockies 12-9 Sunday.

With nine RBIs Saturday, when he hit three three-run homers in a 15-1 win, Sosa set a league record for RBIs in consecutive games with 14.

"A lot of Sammy over the weekend," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said, shaking his head.

In the three-game series, Sosa went 8-for-12.

"You have to be happy about having a series like this one," Sosa said. "I haven't had a series like this in a long time.

"I got good pitches to hit. I'm glad the Rockies pitched to me. Right now, I'm feeling comfortable at the plate and I'm not swinging at so many bad pitches as I used to."

Sosa, who feels the Cubs' charter plane is unsafe, chartered his own private plane for the trip from San Francisco to Denver on Thursday night. He wouldn't confirm if he planned to do the same for the trip back to Chicago.

"Get away with those bad questions," Sosa said.

Corey Patterson hit two homers and drove in three for the Cubs, and Fred McGriff had a two-run homer and three RBIs.

Sosa's grand slam, the seventh of his career, increased his major league-leading home run total to 39.

Schilling's 19th an easy one

PHOENIX -- On his third try, Curt Schilling hardly broke a sweat while becoming the season's first 19-game winner.

Schilling pitched seven scoreless innings as the Diamondbacks completed a three-game sweep of the Florida Marlins 9-2.

He allowed five hits, struck out eight, walked none and threw 89 pitches, 61 for strikes.

"We jumped out early and I thought we kept the pressure on them offensively all day," Schilling said. "That certainly changes the way you pitch. It feels good. We had a good homestand."

CARDINALS 9, METS 0: Chuck Finley and Scott Rolen, who had struggled since being acquired by St. Louis, made big contributions for the host Cardinals.

Rolen, who was batting .150 since coming over from the Phillies, hit his first home run for St. Louis, drove in three and finished a double shy of the cycle. Finley pitched seven shutout innings and lowered his ERA from 6.23 to 4.71 in his fifth start since arriving from the Indians.

BRAVES 13, ASTROS 3: Chipper Jones had a career-high five hits and scored three, and Kevin Millwood won for the ninth time in 10 decisions for visiting Atlanta.

The Braves had a season-high 20 hits in winning for the 10th time in 12 games. Every Braves starter had a hit. The hits were the most allowed by Houston since June 24, 2000, when the Giants had 22.

GIANTS 5, PIRATES 4 (11): Pinch-hitter Ramon Martinez singled home the winner in the 11th as host San Francisco won for the sixth time in eight games.

Robb Nen went a season-high three innings for the win. He walked Aramis Ramirez with the bases loaded in the ninth to force in the tying run, but he struck out Kevin Young to escape further damage.

REDS 9, PADRES 7 (12): Aaron Boone hit a two-run homer in the 12th as host Cincinnati blew a late five-run lead, then rallied. Boone hit three homers in the series opener Friday, then completed the three-game sweep by connecting off Brandon Villafuerte with one out.

Bubba Trammell homered in the seventh off Scott Williamson and hit a two-run shot in the ninth off Danny Graves that tied it at 7.

PHILLIES 6, DODGERS 3: Jimmy Rollins capped his first career five-hit game with a tiebreaking single in the eighth, and visiting Philadelphia cut Los Angeles' wild-card lead over San Francisco to a half-game.

BREWERS 6, EXPOS 2: Ben Sheets allowed five hits in eight innings, and Matt Stairs and Richie Sexson homered for host Milwaukee.
