Challenger fills own campaign war chest
By SAUNDRA AMRHEIN, Times Staff Writer In the race for Pasco County Commission, incumbent Steve Simon and challenger David "Hap" Clark each collected a little more than $5,000 during the most recent fundraising period. The difference is that Clark's money came in just one contribution -- from himself. Clark wrote the $5,050 check to himself for the fundraising period that ran from July 1 to Aug. 1. Friday was the deadline to file or postmark reports, which continued to trickle into the office of the Supervisor of Elections on Monday through the mail. Clark is running against Simon in the Democratic primary for District 4 on Sept. 10. All county registered voters get to choose between the two in the primary, which will decide the race, because there is no Republican candidate. Clark's total contributions equal the size of his check. Simon's $5,145 in contributions this period came from a combination of car dealers, plumbers, health care workers and real estate agents. His total contributions now equal $30,170. In the District 2 County Commission race, incumbent Republican Pat Mulieri collected $7,575 this fundraising period. That equals her total contributions. Her contributors range from real estate agents, attorneys and retired individuals. Her Democratic opponent Amye Cox, who will face Mulieri in the November general election, raised $4,120 during the filing period. That also equals her total contributions to date. Most of Cox's contributions come from developers, who have opposed Mulieri in the past for what they perceive to be antigrowth decisions. The biggest contributions for Cox came through companies registered with the state under developer Alex Deeb. His companies, listed at the same address in New Port Richey, each gave $500. They are River Crossing Development Co., Tri County Development Inc., Labibi Ltd., Forest Oak Villas and Pacaran Corp. Deeb's other company, WADCO Inc., of the same address, gave $200. County Commissioners must run in the district where they live but are elected countywide. -- Saundra Amrhein covers Pasco County government.
