County planning to play on Sept. 11
By BRANT JAMES, Times Staff Writer BROOKSVILLE -- High school sports will be played by county teams on Sept. 11, but not out of any motive to move on with normality on the one-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. The one scheduled event so far -- Central will play at Citrus in volleyball -- happened to be on a Wednesday, normally a slow time on the fall athletic calendar. Hernando High schedules have not been released, nor has Springstead's swim slate. Unlike Pasco County officials, who decided to void Sept. 11 events, Hernando's athletic directors opted for business as usual without discussion. "I've not received anything saying we shouldn't play," Central AD John Sedlack said. "Our philosophy here is, coaches decide their own schedules. "I guess my gut feeling is it's a day that will never be forgotten," he said. "But it has not been declared a national day of mourning, so I guess if the volleyball teams in our county feel it's not wrong to play, there's nothing wrong with it." Springstead athletic director Bob Levija said he was unaware of any talk to not play. He had advocated not canceling events after the attacks. "Everybody's going to remember," Levija said. "I don't think we need to take a day off. I said this last year, and it's my own opinion, but I don't think we should let those b------- intimidate us into changing our way of life." Hernando AD Matt Smith did not return calls to the Times. Pasco County School District superintendent John Long, supervisor of athletics Gus Manticos and the administrative assistant for secondary, adult and alternative schools, Bob Dorn, have asked their teams not to schedule Sept. 11 events. -- Brant James can be reached at (800) 333-7505, ext. 1407.
