Ads aim to help voters vote
By BRADY DENNIS, Times Staff Writer DADE CITY -- Kurt Browning has a message he wants you to see. He's putting it on movie screens and in newspapers, on billboards and banners, on TVs in your home and TVs at the local 7-Eleven. The Pasco supervisor of elections wants county residents to know how to register to vote, how to keep their information current, and most of all where to vote come election day. Browning on Tuesday unveiled three 30-second public service announcements set to air in coming weeks on local television stations and inside 17 local 7-Eleven stores. Browning's office also has taken out print advertisements and rented six billboards throughout the county, alerting passers-by about Pasco's new touch screen voting system. And announcements also will be shown in several local theaters before movies begin. The efforts were funded by $151,000 earmarked for voter education given to Browning's office by the state. "We want to make voting as convenient and hassle-free as possible," Browning said. He said that through such efforts, coupled with more than 400 demonstrations of the new voting systems, he has met voters more than half way. They must take the last step. "My staff has worked very hard to make sure that people know where to vote," Browning said. "(But) people have a responsibility to keep their records current. Many voters think they can just vote wherever they want." Browning's educational campaign is fueled in part by recent redistricting and the addition of 19 new precincts in Pasco. And when nearly 1 in 5 voter ID cards he mailed out recently was returned, Browning said he became even more determined to reach every potential voter, any way he could. Although registration for the Sept. 10 primary already is closed, voters still can register by Oct. 7 for the Nov. 5 general election.
