Dade City bicyclist dies in pickup truck accidentBy Times staff writer© St. Petersburg Times published August 14, 2002 DADE CITY -- One man died Sunday evening when a pickup hit two people, one on a bicycle and another in a wheelchair, according to law enforcement reports. Those reports give the following account: The driver of the pickup truck, Jimmy Sparks, 55, of Dade City, was headed north on U.S. 301 when the accident happened north of Whitehouse Avenue at about 9 p.m. Enrique Hernandez Barbosa, 58, of 37407 Tait Ave., rode his bicycle into the path of the truck. He was flown to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, where he died early Monday after emergency surgery. After the truck hit the bicycle, it spun and struck Patrick Leon McCray, 38, of 37831 Martin Luther King Blvd., who was in a wheelchair. He also was flown to St. Joseph's, where he was treated and released with minor injuries. According to reports, investigators believe there were no reflectors or headlights on the bicycle. Barbosa was not wearing a helmet. The investigation into the case continued Tuesday. Woman faces charges of hitting 12-year-oldHUDSON -- A 12-year-old boy insulted Angela Lucas' son on Monday, Pasco County sheriff's deputies said, so Lucas punched the boy in the head. Lucas, 30, of 9616 Ball Court in Hudson faces charges of simple battery and child abuse, deputies said. The boy suffered a black eye during the Monday evening incident at an undisclosed location in Hudson, deputies said. She said the boy called her son a bucktoothed loser. Lucas was being held Tuesday at county jail in Land O'Lakes in lieu of $5,250 bail. Gulf View Square lands American Eagle OutfittersPORT RICHEY -- American Eagle Outfitters plans to open a 5,600-square-foot store in Gulf View Square mall at the end of August.
