Military newsBy Times staff writer© St. Petersburg Times published August 14, 2002 Lt. Col. David C. Press, son of Jean and Charles D. Press of St. Petersburg, has assumed command of the Honolulu Engineer District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. A career Army officer with 23 years of service, he came to Honolulu District from an assignment as assistant professor of military science at the University of Hawaii ROTC program, which is ranked first of 270 in the nation. Among the positions in which Press has served are platoon leader and company executive officer, 104th Engineer Battalion, New Jersey Army National Guard; platoon leader, company executive officer, assistant battalion operations officer and battalion logistics officer, 15th Engineer Battalion, 9th Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash.; Engineer Officer Basic Course Instructor/Trainer, 554th Engineer Battalion Fort Belvoir, Va.; and assistant battalion operations officer and company commander, 54th Engineer Battalion, Darmstadt, Germany. Press earned a bachelor's degree cum laude from Montclair State College and a master's in business administration from Western New England College. He is a 1982 Distinguished Military Graduate of Seton Hall University Army ROTC program and a graduate of U.S. Army Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. He lives with his wife, Heather, and their two sons. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Charles N. Hale, son of Florence P. Herren of Seminole, completed two months of training exercises and humanitarian missions in the East African nation of Djibouti while assigned to the guided missile cruiser USS Hue City. His home port is Mayport. Hale, a 1997 graduate of Seminole High School, was one of more than 10,000 Atlantic Fleet sailors and Marines aboard ships of the USS John F. Kennedy Carrier Battle Group and USS Wasp Amphibious Ready Group. David A. Sherman, son of Don Sherman of St. Petersburg, graduated from U.S. Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He is stationed at Shepard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he is pursuing a technical career. A native of St. Petersburg, Sherman graduated from St. Petersburg High School in 2001. Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Kenneth Witzman has been assigned to instructor duty at Coast Guard Training Center, Petaluma, Calif.
