By Times staff writer Q: What does a fifth-grade teacher assign as homework for her students the first week of school? A: Kelley Woolford, who teaches at Lakewood Elementary, believes in homework. "I think it allows for continued practice," said Woolford, who is starting her second year as a teacher. "It allows for parental involvement, and that's extremely important." She expects her fifth-graders to spend at least 30 minutes each night on their assignments. She also expects them to spend at least 15 minutes reading for pleasure. "This first week, their homework was primarily to finish up things they started during the day," she said. "Once they get established in a routine, they'll start doing homework as a means of working ahead." This is what Woolford assigned through the weekend: Wednesday: Read the class outline and class procedures with your parents. Make sure your parents read the parent involvement forms and the code of student conduct. Spend 15 minutes reading for pleasure. Thursday: Finish the letter to your imaginary pen pal that you started in class telling him or her what it's like to be a student in Florida. Finish your "about me" form, listing information about yourself. Spend 15 minutes reading for pleasure. Friday: Enjoy the weekend . . . and read! -- If you wish to see a topic addressed, please send your idea to Top of the Class, P.O.
