TAMPA -- The lead prosecutor in the botched case against Steve and Marlene Aisenberg has decided to move to Tallahassee to take a job in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Florida.
Veteran federal prosecutor Stephen Kunz is expected to leave by the end of September, his lawyer said Tuesday.
"He feels that it's in the best interest of himself and his family," Greg Kehoe said. Kunz has been under scrutiny since charges were dropped against the Aisenbergs, who were accused of lying to investigators about the disappearance of their infant daughter, Sabrina. In the aftermath, Kunz was demoted from deputy chief of the criminal division. He went to work in the special prosecutions unit while the U.S. Justice Department investigated the way he and another prosecutor handled the case. That investigation is pending.
Kunz was moved to the office's civil division recently. The new job in the Northern District will be in the criminal division, which is a "better fit for him," Kehoe said.
Kunz has practiced law for more than 20 years and made a name for himself prosecuting corrupt politicians and motorcycle gangs.
