Former boyfriend is charged with smothering baby
By Times staff writer TEMPLE TERRACE -- Five days after the death of 61/2-month-old Kaia Tamayo, Temple Terrace police on Wednesday arrested the man who was watching her before she was rushed to the hospital. Police charged Scott Shaw, 27, with aggravated manslaughter of a child, a press release said. He is being held without bail at the Hillsborough County Jail. Kaia died of suffocation, the Medical Examiner's Office said. Kaia's mother, Beverlyn Villaflor, left Kaia with her ex-boyfriend about 10 p.m. Aug. 8, Lt. Bill Daggett said. About 3:30 the next morning, Shaw put her in a child seat and placed a pillow over her face, Daggett said. "The child was making more noise than he anticipated and was interfering with his sleep," Daggett said. Shaw, who was not the child's father, did not check on Kaia for five hours, he said. That morning, Shaw placed a 911 call saying Kaia was not breathing. She died an hour later, at 9:44 a.m., at University Community Hospital. The same day, Shaw was arrested for failing to report his status as a sex offender. He was released Aug. 10 on $2,500 bail. Villaflor was working when Shaw made the call, police said. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
