Day not stopping at record win

Don't expect Pat Day to put away his whip now that he is the all-time money-winning jockey.

"Realistically speaking, I could probably ride into my mid to late 50s," Day, 48, said before eclipsing Chris McCarron's record Saturday.

Willie Shoemaker and Johnny Longden competed well into their 50s, and Day, at 4-foot-11, 100 pounds, shares their luck in having few serious injuries and manageable weight.

Day passed McCarron by winning the $500,000 Sword Dancer Handicap at Saratoga Race Course aboard With Anticipation. Day's $300,000 in prize money gave him $264,580,968 lifetime. McCarron retired with $264,351,679.

WEEKEND: Saturday's International Festival of Racing at Arlington Park outside Chicago will have a decidedly Breeders' Cup feel, with three major stakes and a bevy of European contenders.

The feature race, the Grade I Arlington Million, will pit likely favorite Beat Hollow against highly regarded German import Paolini, and two turf races, the Grade I Beverly D. for fillies and mares and Grade I Secretariat for 3-year-olds, also will have a strong international flair.

The 5-year-old Paolini is coming off an eighth-place finish in the Group I Prince of Wales Stakes on June 19, a start in which he got bottled up and never recovered. He cleared quarantine Tuesday and galloped the Arlington surface for the first time, leaving Austrian jockey Andreas Suborics convinced the horse shipped well from Germany and the Wales effort was an aberration.

"He felt like a lion out there," Suborics said.

Suborics is correct, he and trainer Andreas Wohler could become the first tandem to win the Million in succession. They won last year with Silvano.

SAKHEE SETBACK: Sakhee, once considered a strong contender in the Breeders' Cup Classic, will be reassessed in England after a stunning loss in the Prix Gontaut-Biron on Saturday.

Sakhee, a 1-5 favorite, was no match for 6-1 shot Wellbeing. The Godolphin runner's future will be determined by upcoming workouts, and he might not attempt to defend his Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe win Oct. 7.

IN CHARGE: Faisal bin Salman has been appointed by his family to oversee the daily operations of late brother Ahmed bin Salman's the Thoroughbred Corp.

Richard Mulhall will remain as racing manager, according to a statement released by the racing and breeding operation.

"It is an honor for me to assume these responsibilities on behalf of the family," Faisal said in a statement.

GRAVE CONDITION: Sunday Silence, winner of the 1989 Kentucky Derby and Preakness, may be put down by his Japanese owners if the laminitis in his left foreleg continues to worsen.

The horse has had to stand for four days for fear he may not be able to get back up if he lays down. His hind legs also are showing signs of the inflammatory hoof disease.

QUICK: Tote companies plan to implement a 46-second cycle for wagering odds in the United States and Canada over the next several months following a successful test at tracks including Belmont Park and Churchill Downs.
