Reel fun for tackle aficionados
Old-time fishing lures, reels and other paraphernalia -- which collectors love as much for the artistic and nostalgic value as for their ability to attract and catch fish -- will be on display at the Coliseum in St. Petersburg Saturday.
Some of the items will be available for sale. Others will be just for show. (Tackle collectors like to tell stories about their acquisitions almost as much as anglers like to tell fish tales.)
The public can bring old tackle for appraisal or to place on consignment for an auction open only to members of the Florida Antique Tackle Collectors. The show is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Coliseum, 535 Fourth Ave. N, St. Petersburg. $2 adults, free for children. (727) 892-5202.
Go to the hoop with some of NBA's best
Lakers center Shaquille O'Neal, fresh from a third consecutive NBA title, brings a bunch of his sports celebrity friends to Tampa this weekend for basketball camps and a benefit game.
The game, at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Ice Palace, is scheduled to feature O'Neal, Orlando Magic guard Tracy McGrady, Toronto Raptors guard Vince Carter, former Atlanta Hawks All-Star forward Dominique Wilkins, original Harlem Globetrotter Curly Neal, lightweight boxing champ Floyd Mayweather Jr. and more. Other weekend events include the Shaquille O'Neal Attacks Literacy dinner with Gov. Jeb Bush, a two-day youth basketball clinic and a postgame party. Space is limited for those events. For information, check www.tcbw.com or call (813) 873-7779.
Tickets for the basketball game ($20 to $250) are available at the Ice Palace box office (813) 223-1000, or at Ticketmaster (813) 287-8844 or (727) 898-2100.
