Former King of Comedy out on his own
D.L. Hughley's on the road again.
Only this time he's not touring with his fellow Kings of Comedy Cedric the Entertainer, Bernie Mac and Steve Harvey, a tour that grossed $37-million and sold out in 50 cities.
"A large-scale tour like Kings of Comedy is just a lot more bells and whistles. With Kings I only got to do 20 minutes of material. Now I can do an hour and a half," Hughley told the Fresno Bee in June. "Also with Kings, if one of us talked about something, the others wouldn't. In this show, I will talk about anything I want."
Hughley started in small clubs and got his big break in the early '90s when he landed an appearance on HBO's Def Comedy Jam. The Los Angeles native went on to host Comic View on the BET network.
His sitcom, The Hughleys, spent two years on ABC before moving to UPN for two more years. It was not renewed for the coming season.
Hughley appears at the Tampa Improv, 1600 E Eighth Ave., Ybor City, at 8 and 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 7 and 9 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $26 and $28. For more information and reservations, call (813) 864-4000.
