49ERS: Veteran safety Chad Cota signed, helping offset the loss of rookie safety Kevin Curtis, who was placed on injured reserve with a season-ending knee injury. Cota had 94 tackles and two interceptions for Indianapolis last season, but the Colts cut him in February to clear his $2-million salary from the payroll. "Any time you get a chance to add a tough, experienced, hard-nosed veteran player you do it," defensive coordinator Jim Mora said. "When you're trying to make a run at it, it's great to have an experienced guy. Chad is tough, smart and experienced."

GIANTS: Cornerback Jason Sehorn (leg) practiced for the first time in more than two weeks. ... Doctors decided not to operate on rookie offensive tackle Jeff Hatch's ailing back, for now.

RAMS: Marshall Faulk will sit out a second preseason game tonight against Chicago. The running back has more than 2,000 yards in four consecutive seasons, and coach Mike Martz does not want to risk injury. "I don't know that Marshall needs to play in the preseason. He's in great shape. He gets a lot of work in practice. He'll do a little work maybe in the preseason but we'll worry about that in the next week or two." ... Cornerback Aeneas Williams, who bruised his left leg Wednesday, is expected to play.
